What is Industrial Edge?¶
Siemens Industrial Edge (IE) is a ready-to-use edge computing platform. It combines Edge devices, apps, and integrated management tools for global deployment and control.

- Expands industrial automation technology with openness and flexibility for simple and intuitive processing, analysis and saving the production data.
- Provides an integrated and secure runtime environment for running high-level programming language-based Edge applications (based on the Docker IT standard) for local and powerful data processing and analysis at the automation level.
- Compared to conventional PC-based systems, Industrial Edge enables an integrated connection to automation and cloud systems without additional programming workload and offers the option to manage Edge devices and software worldwide with one central management system. This makes data processing solutions future-proof to the maximum possible extent and enables new possible applications such as centralized software administration and versioning, for example for global recipe management.
The Industrial Edge Platform consists of the three components that create a simple workflow to manage distributed IT infrastructure.

Industrial Edge Hub (IEH): centralized repository of all available Edge apps from Siemens and other ecosystem App Partners.

Industrial Edge Management (IEM): on-premise control plane to manage all devices, apps and users of a shopfloor.

Industrial Edge Device (IED): a software layer to execute containerized apps.
Industrial Edge Ecosystem¶
The Industrial Edge Ecosystem is for your implementation and usage, if you are an industrial producer or machine producer. You can connect, create, deploy and scale your industrial use case using the Industrial Edge platform in combination with apps, devices and solutions from the Industrial Edge Ecosystem. You may also develop your own apps and deploy them via the Industrial Edge Management.

Industrial Edge Apps¶

Analytics, Dashboarding & Archiving: To handle your data coming in, you may either use those Edge Apps which are readily available on the Marketplace, or develop your own app and upload it to your Industrial Edge Management to use it on your Edge devices.

Southbound connectivity: Choose a suitable connector for receiving machine data according to supported prototcol types (e.g. UPC UA, PROFINET IO, audio, video,...)

Build your use case¶
When constructing your Industrial Edge system with these components, you may consider a few questions in advance:
- What problem needs to be solved? It may be an issue regarding predictive maintenance, a quality check with visual inspection, monitoring of e.g. energy consumption, and so on
- What are the devices providing data from the shopfloor?
- Pre-processing & analyzing of data on the shopfloor or in the cloud?
- Display of data on shopfloor or in IT? Are notifications required?
- Connect to a cloud for further analysis? Local cloud or specific vendor? With specific requirements?
- Which security standards need to be achieved?
